REVIEW: Cirque Du Soleil’s KURIOS at the Royal Albert Hall

Are you looking to delve into a world of showstopping talent? Then grab your keys and prepare to unlock Cirque Du Soleil’s Cabinet Of Curiosities at their brand new production KURIOS, currently playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Having admired the undeniable artistry of Cirque from afar for years, I was thrilled to be invited to the European premiere press night at one of London’s most prestigious and grand venues. 

The minute I stepped into the space, I was transported into a wonderful world of spectacular steampunk spectacles. Before the show started, we were greeted with glimpses of what was to come through pre-show interactions delivered by this curious cast. 

REVIEW: Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty at Sadler's Wells

When it comes to fairy tales, we have often heard the story a thousand times before. Yet, when going to see a New Adventures production, every tale that you thought you knew, gets a whole new lease of life and magic, which is certainly the case for their current production of Sleeping Beauty, currently playing at Sadler’s Wells Theatre until January 15th 2023.

Having been a fan of Matthew Bourne for over ten years, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend the press night of Sleeping Beauty, as it reawakens celebrating 10 years since its premiere at Sadler’s Wells when it became the fastest-selling production in the company’s history.

Having mesmerised international audiences around the globe, I was eager to be transported into yet another mystical masterpiece by the company of New Adventures, who undoubtedly proved once again why they are an unstoppable world-class force to be reckoned with. 

REVIEW: Who's Holiday at the Southwark Playhouse

It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags. Yet this year if you visit the Southwark Playhouse, you will find a fresh tale that is legendary, no doubt! 

As someone who unashamedly identifies as a festive fanatic, I was thrilled to attend the press night of Who’s Holiday by Matthew Lambardo, currently making its European debut at the Southwark Playhouse in London until 7th January 2023. 

The one-person show, starring Ru Paul’s Drag Race royalty and fan favourite Miz Cracker, re-introduces us to everybody’s favourite Who, Cindy-Lou Who, except this time, she is all grown up, and not so innocent! As you take a trip back to Mount Crumpit, we check in with this not-so-small Who, as she reflects on that infamous night she met the Grinch, and the whirlwind adventure of events that has led to her not-so-festive, isolated reality.

Well, if the happiest day of your life is what you’re looking for, Drag Race royalty BenDeLaCreme has the answer you are looking for! You are cordially invited to a front-row seat at the most unusual wedding of the year in her latest international one-woman show, ‘BenDelaCreme is… Ready To Be Committed’, currently playing at the Leicester Square Theatre, London. 

Having been a fan of her work since her original season on the smash-hit reality show, I jumped at the chance to join her down the aisle by snapping up a ticket, and I certainly didn’t regret it! 

REVIEW: Ballet Boyz: Deluxe at Sadler's Wells

When I hear the word ‘Ballet’, my mind transports me straight to a front-row seat at the classic tale Swan Lake.

Last night, that traditional vision was shattered, by the dynamic, daring and delightful talents of the cast of Balletboyz: Deluxe, which I had the pleasure of attending during the Press Night performance at the prestigious Sadlers Wells. 

As someone who has had a passion for dance and choreography from a young age, I jumped at the chance to grab a ticket for a production performed and driven by a cast of male-identifying individuals. Even before the curtain had lifted, I took pride and inspiration in the knowledge that this cast and concept of production alone makes a bold statement simply by contradicting gender stereotypes historically seen within dance productions. 

REVIEW: Steve at the Seven Dials Playhouse

Does anyone still wear, a hat? I’ll drink to that! 

Here’s to the ladies who lunch, and the cast of ‘Steve’! Whom I was lucky enough to watch live last night during their press night performance. The play, directed by Andrew Keates, is currently making its European premiere in the heart of London at The Seven Dials Playhouse. 

The minute I stepped into the space, I was greeted by an infectious buzz and undeniable anticipation for this inaugural production at Seven Dials Playhouse. Having previously run in NYC in 2015, where it was listed as The New York Times Critic’s Pick, I was yearning to delve into a world of escapism, comedy and more Stephen Sondheim references than an Off-Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George! 

REVIEW: The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me at the New Wimbledon Theatre Studio

Last night, I was transported back in time to the buzz, thrills, and raw activism of 1980’s New York as I attend the press night performance of “The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me”, written by David Drake, directed by Steven Dexter, currently playing at the New Wimbledon Theatre Studio.  

As a gay, gender-questioning identifying individual, I have a rich passion for any LGBTQIA+ related theatre, topics and issues, literature, history, or art, therefore after exploring the context of this play, I was both intrigued and eager to delve back into the queer history books. 

Furthermore, what felt even more special was the fact that this piece is debuting and running during LGBT+ History Month here in the UK, therefore acting as a beautiful, yet haunting reminder of our past, and how many positive steps forward we have taken since. 

REVIEW: Dick Whittington - A New Dick in Town at Above the Stag

A pantomime in November? Oh yes, it is! 

Some may argue that it is still far too early to begin celebrating Christmas. Me? I say bring on the mince pies and merriment! Which is why I jumped at the opportunity to snap up a ticket to Dick Whittington, A New Dick in Town! Which has just started its run at the Above The Stag Theatre in Vauxhall.  

Growing up I would often go with my family to the local pantomime each year in my hometown, however, until last night, I was yet to see an adult pantomime. I can confirm that it would certainly turn a few heads back in my neck of the woods! 

Much like the traditional tale, the story follows gay country lad Dick, as he comes to the big city in search of men and money. However, when dirty diva Queen Rat comes along and frames Dick for crime he hasn’t committed, it’s certain that Dick’s life will become harder than ever before (pun intended!). 

REVIEW: The Choir of Man at the Arts Theatre

When I hear the word “choir”, I often think of a traditional setting, with outdated music, delivered in a classical genre. After watching The Choir of Man, that vision has truly been shattered and reborn for me! 

Last night I attended the opening press night performance of The Choir of Man, which following three sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House and multiple sold-out US and European tours has just started its debut West End run at The Arts Theatre, London. I have often seen this show advertised, however, have never had the opportunity to see it first-hand. Therefore, when the opportunity arose, I grabbed it with both hands, and I can’t express how thrilled I am that I did! 

Set in your everyday local pub, The Jungle, the show delves into the lives of nine multi-talented individuals. Packed full of heart, humour, and harmony (just literally with their world-class, faultless vocals!), and featuring a jam-packed soundtrack of reimagined folk, pop, Broadway and rock chart-toppers from artists including Guns ‘N’ Roses, Fun!, Adele, Avicii, Paul Simon, Sia, and more, this show is an irresistible lock-in that you never want to end! 

REVIEW: Alyssa: Memoirs of a Queen at the Vaudeville Theatre

Theatre is back for 2021! And for one week only, the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s bustling West End has managed to smuggle in a fan favourite from Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Of course, I am talking about the Texas doll herself, Miss Alyssa Edwards, who is currently performing in her one-woman show: “Alyssa: Memoirs of a Diva”. 

Marking her West End debut, “Alyssa: Memoirs of a Diva!” is a whistle-stop tour of drag excellence as we dive into the whirlwind lifestyle of the dancing diva herself. With stories about her time on the hit TV phenomenon, her own Netflix series “Dancing Queen”, lip-syncs and more rhinestones than Priscilla’s tour bus, this show contains all the glitz and glam any drag fan could hope for, while also introducing us to the individual behind the glitter foam wig and lashes. 

From the minute the curtain went up, it was clear that we were in the hands of a seasoned, professional entertainer, and in for a highly entertaining evening, packed full of goops, gags, and giggles!

REVIEW: In Pieces online at Stream.Theatre

At one point or another during the current pandemic, I am confident that each and every one of us have felt somewhat lost, or perhaps even left “In Pieces”, which just so happens to be the title of Future Spotlight Productions newly produced musical film, in collaboration with original writer Joey Contreras. 

Originally debuted at the Lincoln Center in New York City, “In Pieces” is now having its worldwide debut being released as a film in support of LGBT Foundation. “In Pieces” follows a series of diverse characters, delving into their personal relationships and stories, exploring how clarity and empowerment manifest themselves within them. 

Available from Friday 23rd April 2021 for a limited time, “In Pieces” provides us with the unique opportunity to enjoy a brand-new slice of musical theatre from the comfort and safety of our living room, all while supporting a fantastic cause and new material. 

REVIEW: Girl Power - The Original London cast of SIX Reunite (Online at Thespie.com)

If 2020 has provided us with one thing, it’s the development and innovative thinking behind technological resources that provides us with the ability to put on, and stream a fantastic, high-quality production from the comfort and safety of our homes! And Girl Power is no exception to that rule.

Presented by the original West End queens of the musical SIX, this marks the girls second online concert, returning following phenomenal popularity and demand. 

REVIEW: Potted Panto at the Garrick Theatre

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! 

Sadly, following the extremely challenging year the world continues to endure, I think a vast handful of people are shouting “OH NO IT ISN’T!”. 

Well, that certainly is not the case at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End, whom, despite all the odds and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, have managed to reopen their doors to spread some festive cheer through the magic that is live theatre, just in time for Christmas!

The Garrick Theatre are one of the few venues in London that have managed to reopen as part of the NIMAX Theatre Group. They are currently showcasing three productions within their December and New Year schedule: Death Drop, Showstoppers: An Improvised Musical, and Potted Panto. 

“Potted Panto”, a one act pantomime that puts a unique spin on seven classic tales within seventy minutes. The show is headed by double Olivier nominees Dan and Jeff, who are fresh off their world tour and Las Vegas residency of Harry Potter parody “Potted Potter”. This year marks their tenth anniversary festive season of “Potted Panto”, and within the first five minutes alone, it was clear to see why this dynamic duo have returned year after year to packed audiences in London’s West End. 

REVIEW: C-o-n-t-a-c-t, a socially distanced outdoor experience

 

Since March, theatre has been virtually non-existent. As a nation, we have relied on virtual entertainment and arts to get us through the dreaded lockdown. Netflix, and latest phenomenon Disney+ have kept our creative juices flowing, but nothing can compare to the experience of seeing LIVE theatre. Therefore, you can imagine how thrilled I was to grab a ticket to the UK premiere of C-o-n-t-a-c-t, a socially distanced outdoor experience. 

Yes, that’s right! Theatre is BACK ladies and gents, and more creative than ever. 

Originating in France throughout summer in a world where “keep 2m apart” and avoiding coughing is the new normal, “C-o-n-t-a-c-t” delivers a modern and relatable story exploring the complexities of living with mental health and anxiety in the present day. 

The story is told through the eyes (and thoughts!) of Sarah, who is approached by a man she believes to be a stranger. Little does she know; this man knows her much better than she thinks! 

REVIEW: The Barricade Boys at the Other Palace

Back by popular demand following their critically acclaimed season in 2017, and hot off their 40 city 2019 UK tour, the Barricade Boys have come home for Christmas, with their brand new festive residency at The Other Palace Theatre in Victoria (Studio space). 

Having only seen the Barricade Boys briefly in action at this year’s West End Live Festival in Trafalgar Square, I was eager to see them perform a full concert, and what better way to start than with a Christmas Cabaret; the most wonderful time of the year. A sentiment that these four boys certainly didn’t fail to disappoint.

It became quickly apparent as to why this quartet have had sell out performances in London’s West End, an appearance at the St James Theatre on Broadway, and continue to delight audiences worldwide in their international dates and appearances. Plain and simply, they know how to put on a bloody good show! Truly showcasing some of the finest voices that London’s West End has to offer.

REVIEW: 42nd Street at Upstairs at the Gatehouse

Following their 21st anniversary last year, Ovation Theatres latest production sees them tackle the tap extravaganza musical favourite, 42nd Street; currently playing its UK fringe theatre premiere at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate. 

Vastly downsizing to a cast made up of 13 compared to the recent West End production at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which consisted of an impressive cast of 58 members, Ovations adaptation can be nothing short of applauded for the mammoth challenge they have taken on; in particular within the effective use of limited space. 

Staged in a promenade setting with entrances at either end, the production was directed thoughtfully to ensure all audience members had an excellent view of each scene and number. This was particularly apparent whenever choreography was introduced throughout.

REVIEW: Little Baby Bum Live! at the Troubadour White City Theatre

Ever wonder what happened to Incy Wincy Spider or the Muffin Man? Well now you can find out, as they take to the stage in a brand new adventure with Little Baby Bum Live! 

Based on the smash hit world’s largest educational YouTube channel, the recently opened Troubadour White City Theatre are inviting families across London as part of their inaugural summer season ‘Troubakids Festival’ to step into the magical and colourful world of Little Baby Bum. 

Hosting four family productions throughout the summer season, Troubakids Festival has been created to delight and inspire the next generation of young theatregoers in their inviting, spacious and modern new space. It must be noted at this point that Alistair Shaw, Managing Director of White City Projects, along with Troubadour Theatres and Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and AIMCo have clearly invested immense amounts of careful planning and budget into this new theatre, having created two truly state of the art, versatile theatres under one roof to satisfy and entertain an extensive and diverse demographic. Their vision to transform the local area and create a new and accessible cultural experience is clearly paying off. 

REVIEW: Jean Paul Gaultier: Fashion Freak Show at The Southbank Centre

This summer the Southbank Centre is getting a fashion make over with a twist. Imagine Queer Eye, the runways of 1970s Paris and an endless array of fabrics have a love child, and you have the foundations of Jean Paul Gaultiers new spectacular revue show, making its U.K. debut for thirteen performances only. Direct from its triumphant run at the Folies Bergere in Paris, Fashion Freak Show allows London audiences a chance to encounter a level of quirkiness, sexiness and genius fashion that is unforeseen. 

Eccentric, eclectic and erotic, Jean Paul Gaultier is shaking up London with his scandalous new creation, Fashion Freak Show. The production is an explosive celebration of 50 years of pop culture, all delivered through the eyes of fashion’s infant terror.

We delve into a technicolour live autobiography of Gaultier’s life; from his childhood to his early career. From his greatest works, to his long term, iconic influencers, collaborations and supporters (a lot of whom make a shameless cameo throughout!). Each page of the story contrasting to the last and yet complimenting each other in the grand scale of this bold and stimulating re-enactment unfolding before our eyes. 

REVIEW: Games for Lovers at The Vaults

You’ve got a match! Wait, did they just swipe left?!

It is estimated that there are some 850 million swipes taking place around the world each day. Now, I’m no mathematician, nor am I a millionaire matchmaker to the stars, but I think it’s safe to say that the population worldwide have one thing in common; finding love

And love is certainly in the air down at The Vaults in Waterloo in the world premiere production of ‘Games for Lovers’; a new comedy play written by Ryan Craig, and directed by Anthony Banks.

We are introduced to smitten kittens Logan (Calum Callaghan) and Jenny (Tessie Orange-Turner), alongside hopeless singletons Martha (Evanna Lynch) and Darren (Billy Postlethwaite); each longing to find the one via their own uniquely designed algorithm. Martha, one of the worst flirters in history is desperate to pluck up the courage to ask out ‘Doctor Boner’ at her work. Enlisting the help of life long best friend Logan, and self-proclaimed master of all things swag and chat related Darren, Martha weighs up her options and attempts to partake in flirting school 101. But when jealous girlfriend Jenny gets envious of how much time Logan is spending with Martha, there is bound to be trouble in paradise, with a diagnosis of a broken heart. 

REVIEW: Holy Land at The Lion and Unicorn Theatre

These days it seems people will post pretty much anything on social media for a reaction. From retweets on Twitter, to emojis on Facebook, and of course double taps on Instagram, the modern day generation seems to have forgotten about the origin purpose and flip side to the World Wide Web. Enter ‘Holyland’; a place where all the darkest sides of the internet are made into reality. A place where you go to view content you know you shouldn’t, and yet can’t resist a sneak peek at, the dark mirror to YouTube, if you will.

Written by newcomer Matthew Gouldesbrough, ELEGY’s latest project of ‘Holyland’ is about to complete its run at The Lion and Unicorn Theatre in Kentish Town before embarking on a full UK tour, including a spot at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show explores the prevalent and haunting matter of the darker side of both life, and the internet. 

Presented as a three hand cast, we follow three separate stories of Jon (Rick Romero), Tim (Matthew Gouldesbrough) and Kate (Hannah Marrison), all of which in turn lead us to one question; how little control do we have of human nature? Containing themes of sexual abuse, violence and disturbing footage and images, this production certainly has a highly intense and important topic at the centre of its core; a topic that as an audience member I was eager to hear more about.
